Mark Strauss

Mark Strauss is senior vice president of Corporate Strategy and Business Development. Named to this position in 2010, Mr. Strauss is responsible for working with the senior management team to link overall strategy and major growth efforts for American Water’s regulated and competitive operations.

Mr. Strauss was previously president of American Water Enterprises, the non-regulated products and services division of American Water. In this role, Mr. Strauss oversaw American Water’s non-regulated business units that offer operations and maintenance contract services across the United States and Canada, including water and wastewater management for military bases, service-line protection programs, design, construction and operation of community onsite water and wastewater systems, and other innovative solutions that address a variety of challenges facing the industry.

Previously, Mr. Strauss served as president and chief executive officer of Applied Water Management Group, American Water’s fully-integrated water and wastewater infrastructure design, build, finance, own and operate affiliate, which provides customized water and wastewater management solutions to real estate developers, industrial clients, and small to midsized communities. During his tenure, Mr. Strauss was credited with bringing to fruition projects that include the Solaire in New York City, the nation’s first on-site water recycling system built inside a multi-family residential building, to winning the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for a water reclamation project in New Jersey.

Mr. Strauss joined American Water’s Applied Water Management Group in 1997 as corporate counsel and secretary.  He was promoted to the position of chief operating officer in 2002, a position he held until his appointment as division president and chief executive officer in 2003.

Prior to that, he had been with Vizzoni Brothers Construction, Inc. as vice president and general counsel.  Mr. Strauss was an associate/junior partner at the law firm of Ozzard, Rizzolo, Klein, Mauro & Savo, and an Associate at the law firm of Toolan, Romond, Abbot and Domenichetti.

He is a member of the New Jersey Bar Association, the board of directors of Skylands Community Bank, and the Design/Build Institute of America.

Mr. Strauss holds a JD from Seton Hall University School of Law, N.J., and a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College, ME.
